A Look At Different Perspectives On The MARVIN NICHOLS RESERVOIR

For many years, Texas officials have contemplated building the Marvin Nichols Reservoir to meet the needs of the growing population of the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex.  While many support that proposal, it has drawn fire from a number of groups.  Opponents feel the need can be met in other ways, such as water conservation or expanding Wright Patman Lake.  Inside, an official from the metroplex describes the efforts the area is making to conserve water and its need for more.  Other articles highlight the objections of International Paper and the Cuthand community.

Common Phrases In The Marvin Nichols Issue

Marvin Nichols Reservoir:  The reservoir proposed in Franklin, Titus and Red River counties in Northeast Texas.  Two site locations have been considered but the primary focus by planning groups is on site 1A.  The reservoir would be created by damming the Sulphur River and could flood up to 72,000 acres.

Acre-Feet:  When measuring water, the term acre-feet is used, meaning the amount of water needed to cover 1 acre with 1 foot of water.  It is 325,851 gallons.  The Marvin Nichols Reservoir would provide 612,300 acre-feet of water per year.

Mitigation:  The setting aside of land to compensate for the impact of a project.  The ratio of mitigation land to land inundated for a reservoir depends on the character of the land affected and the type and quality of the mitigation offered.

Cuthand:  A small northeast Texas community located in the south-central part of Red River County, about 10 miles south of Clarksville.

International Paper:  Texarkana's IP mill makes material for paper containers like paper cups and French-fry containers, plus a folding carton product such as used in high-end cosmetics and lottery tickets.  One version of Windows software was packed solely in IP product.

Region D:  Includes Lamar, Red River, Delta, Bowie, Franklin, Titus, Morris, Cass, Camp, Marion, Upshur, Harrison, Gregg, Smith, Wood, Van Zandt, Rains, Hung and Hopkins Counties.

Region C:  Includes Cooke, Grayson, Fannin, Jack, Wise, Denton, Collin, Parker, Tarrant, Dallas, Rockwall, Kaufman, Ellis, Henderson, Navarro and Freestone Counties.
