When one arrives in Texas from Oklahoma
by way of US Highway 259 from Idabel to De Kalb, one passes this
border marker at a Red River crossing. Notice how many "good
ol' boys" have taken aim at it from their pick-up trucks,
apparently trying to hit the X mark in the center. Quite a few
missed the "bullseye" but hit the adjacent A. They just
must've had too many Coors Light at the Orange Blossom Special
Ballroom.
The Sulphur River Galleries
These Galleries can be viewed in
order or at random. They are linked to one another in sequence
and contain almost 200 photographs. The first 16 galleries are
assembled in the chronological order that would be seen by the
modern traveller, driving northeasterly from Mount Pleasant, Texas,
along Interstate 30, turning north onto US Highway 259, and then
turning onto the country roads west of US Highway 259, as well
as Texas Highway 71. The distance from Mount Pleasant on I-30
or Sugar Hill on TX 71 to the intersections of I-30 and US 259
is approximately 18 miles. From there north on US 259 to the Dalby
Road is another 5 miles. From there to the Cedar Creek Church
and Cemetery or the country lane to the Shumake Ranch is about
7 miles. The Shumake Lane goes 1 mile west and 2 miles south to
Sulphur River. The distance "as the crow flies" from
downtown Mount Pleasant to the Shumake Ranch would be about 18
miles and on to Cedar Creek, another 2 miles. This abominable
Marvin Nichols Reservoir, which will stretch westwards for about
40 miles from US 259, will destroy literally thousands of acres
of currently pristine wilderness land and fragile wetland ecosystems.

If you are travelling along I-30 and US 259
from Mount Pleasant to the Shumake Ranch, you will pass through
the above places in these galleries, in this order. But when you
reach the intersection to Cedar Creek, you would turn northwards
from that main road to Cedar Creek; but if you were to continue
on that main road for a couple of miles, then you would arrive
at the private road shown in the galleries below for the Shumake
Ranch, and then turn southwestwardly for three miles to the Shumake
riverfront.

As I travel around in Northeast
Texas in the coming months, I'll always take along my Kodak Digital
Camera DC-120; and if I see anything of unusual interest, I'll
be sure to photograph it and add a new gallery here. Please check
back occasionally for new material.
