Sulphur River Gallery 44
White Oak Creek (Central)
Just north of the county road to
Mount Sylvia, this is the view north on FM 1402, a distance of
about 2 miles, end to end. Sugar Hill is just north of the far
turn in the road. The white bridge in the center of the picture
is the bridge over White Oak Creek, about a mile north of the
view from the J.J. Morris Ranch. See also Gallery
21. All of this low-lying area would be flooded by Marvin
Nichols II. Road access from Mount Pleasant to Sugar Hill would
be obliterated, unless they were to construct a 3-mile-long causeway
over this low spot around White Oak Creek.
This is a view of White Oak Creek
from the FM 1402 bridge looking east, in the direction of the
creek flow.
And this is a view of the creek
looking west from the bridge.
There are three bridges in this
low spot around White Oak Creek. The southern bridge is over the
creek itself. The middle bridge is a flood-control bridge. The
northern bridge goes over a slough that backs up west from White
Oak Creek. This is a view of that slough, looking to the west.
It is actually wider than the creek itself. I have styled it "Piney
Slough" because Patricia McKelvey told me that sometimes
it backs up and forms a small lake just north of the historical
old slave community of Piney. All of this area, and probably Piney
itself and the Piney Cemetery, would be flooded by the "potential"
Marvin Nichols II Reservoir.
This is a view of "Piney Slough"
looking east.
Just north of the White Oak Creek
bridges, one can turn left (west) onto Titus County Road NW 46
which goes from FM 1402 to FM 2152 north of White Oak Creek. This
is a view looking west on this county road near FM 1402.
