Stephenson's Ferry
Stephenson's Ferry began its operation
across the Sulphur River (modern-day US Highway 67 bridge) in
1835, when many of the ancestors of us who still live here arrived
from Arkansas, Tennessee, Georgia and other points east. Those
were the days when people went west, signing out as GTT -- Gone
To Texas. This area of the Sulphur River marks the boundary between
Cass and Bowie Counties. This historical marker is in Cass County.
This is a view looking northeast
across US 67 from the historical marker. The white bridge at the
low-point in the distance has replaced Stephenson's Ferry as the
modern way of crossing the Sulphur River.
This is the view looking southeast
from the US 67 bridge over Sulphur River, in the direction where
the river is flowing. The "left bank" would be to the
left in this picture; the "right bank" to the right.
And this is the bridge view looking
northwest. The "left bank" of the river is on the right
side of this photograph.
This is the new (since about 1960)
US 67 bridge over Sulphur River. The river would be flowing from
the right to left sides of the photograph. I was standing at the
public boat ramp access to take this photo.
