Maple's Magic Valley
The trees in the above photograph
follow the streambed of Sand Branch, about half a mile away. Sand
Branch flows into Cuthand Creek just west of its confluence with
Burkhand Branch. All of this prime cattle pastureland would be
flooded by the proposed new Marvin Nichols I Reservoir.
Just look how flat and level this
land is! You'd probably be able to walk across most of this abominable
lake with your head sticking out of the top of the water!
"One can't believe impossible things!" cried Alice to
the Queen.
These cows were grazing on the Magic
Valley Ranch.
This is Magic Valley Lake. Magic
Valley Ranch & Lake is located about three miles from the
historic community of Maple on Cuthand Creek.
Down this rather treacherous country
lane, at the southeastern corner of Magic Valley Ranch, there
is another old historic cemetery. It is indicated in my road atlas
as "Evergreen", just as the other one is called. Perhaps
this was a northern "sister community" of the other
Evergreen south of Sulphur River.
Members of the Robinson family are buried here, and these graves
would have to be moved. This view is looking east.
The cemetery is located on the other
side of this rickety barbed-wire fence under the tall oak tree.
I was standing at the eastern end of the country lane, where it
turns to the north for about another half-mile. A couple of miles
southeast of here is the confluence of Kickapoo Creek with Burkhand
Branch. Waters backing up into these streambeds, as well as Cuthand
Creek, would flood this entire area. The present road from Boxelder
to Cuthand Community would be flooded for a stretch of about eight
miles. I wouldn't have been able to leisurely drive along here
as I did this day (31 May 2002).
