Sulphur River Gallery 18
Sulphur Bluff
From Highway 900, one turns north
onto County Road 69 to Sulphur Bluff at the intersection of State
Highway 71. This is a view of County Road 69 looking north from
just south of Sulphur Bluff.
This is an historical marker in
historic Sulphur Bluff. It is unclear to me whether Sulphur Bluff
will be "condemned" or "mitigated" for the
sake of the reservoir or even be underwater at the extreme western
end. But this historical marker is located about 3 miles south
of South Sulphur River. Sulphur Bluff is in the northeastern part
of Hopkins County. The northern boundary of Hopkins County meets
the northern boundary of Franklin County at the exact spot where
the North and South Sulphur Rivers converge into the main Sulphur
River.
County Road 69 goes northwards from
Sulphur Bluff about 3 miles to a dead-end at someone's ranch,
about a mile south of South Sulphur River. The last mile or two
of the county road is not paved.
When you reach the dead-end of County
Road 69, you have entered someone's private property which extends
all the way down to the South Sulphur riverbank, seen in the above
photograph, looking north, as the row of trees beyond the pasture.
This is a view looking east down
the country lane to this private ranch.
These ranchers were raising white
Brahman cattle. (At least, I think that's what they were!
I'm no cowpoke!) This was such a beautifully bucolic and tranquil
scene! And it is only a stone's throw from the South Sulphur River.
I might add here that, without trespassing onto this property,
I was not actually able to see the South Sulphur River.
