Holloway Crossing
This bend of the river on the Shumake
Ranch, at the river's junction with Roden Creek, was previously
known as Holloway Crossing. It is a shallow or low point on the
river, where foot traffic was possible 150 years ago. Before the
era of Interstate Highway bridges, people crossed these rivers
wherever they could. Holloway Crossing was just north of a small
Confederate Negro Community known as Evergreen, where an historic
cemetery is still located today. Outlaw Cullen
Baker undoubtedly passed through Holloway Crossing many times
in his legendary travels from his father-in-law's Arkansas farm
just across the border from Bloomburg, Texas [formerly known as
Forest Home], westwards to Mount Pleasant, Texas [formerly known
as Indian Springs], and beyond. Cullen's Sulphur River "Line
Ferry" and old Hubbard Crossing are already buried underneath
Lake Wright Patman. So, if this abominable Marvin Nichols Reservoir
is approved, our historical destruction will be complete. You
must decide for yourselves if this is "progress" or
not. I don't think so.
