Sulphur River Gallery 13
Roden Creek
This is cow pastureland located
adjacent to both Roden Creek and Sulphur River. This olden, tall
oak tree grows only a few short yards from the riverbank and is
one of the thousands of such trees that will be sticking out of
the lake level, slowly dying and crumbling over a period of half
a century. This Marvin Nichols Reservoir project is an abomination
of an idea that should never have been proposed in the first place.
Millions of these "crawdad
houses" can be found all along the banks of Sulphur River
and the various tributaries like Roden Creek which feed into the
historic river.
The three photographs above depict
Roden Creek at the point where it flows into Sulphur River. The
Shumake family keeps an old folding chair at the river's edge
in order to enjoy a spontaneous and relaxing afternoon of catfish and bass fishing. Some of the
finest fishing areas of Northeast Texas are located along these
creeks and Sulphur River. Just ask Titus County Judge Danny Pat
Crooks, as well as renegade fishermen David Sherrill Allen, Travis
"Bill" Beck, Joel Smith, or Joe Max and Patricia McKelvey.
