The Shumake Ranch
The 800-acre Shumake Ranch is only
slightly more than 1% of the total estimated 72,000 acres that
would be flooded for the Marvin Nichols I Reservoir. I have heard
talk that only 3 individuals/consortiums own two-thirds of this
total acreage, and these three stand to gain the most from the
condemnation of their "useless" land. Two-thirds of
72,000 would be 48,000 acres. Multiply that by a conservative
condemnation value of $300 per acre, and the total gain to these
three landowners would be $14,400,000!
This is historic grassy Lake Cullen
Baker, which has recently been "christened" after this
legendary schizophrenic 19th-century outlaw of Northeast Texas
and Southwest Arkansas. This pristine "fishing hole"
with lily pads, which was formed years ago by a dam on a creek
that feeds into Sulphur River, is located on the Shumake Ranch.
We don't need another Sulphur River lake. We already have one
-- several, in fact! The upper photograph shows the lake home
of a family of pesky beavers. Cullen
Baker, who once traded horses with Jesse James, camped and
trained with his "New Rebellion" alongside the Sulphur
riverbank. Famous local outlaws Ben Bickerstaff and Bob Lee joined
Cullen's "New Rebellion" and also frequented Sulphur
River Bottom. This river is a part of our history, and the river
and its adjacent creeks and land should be preserved for all time.
We owe it to the future generations!
